Sometimes, When Changing Opinions, We Have to Start with Our Own

After quietly (Ok, relatively speaking – sheesh!) reading Twitter, Facebook and about every poker publication and blog out there (about 1500 unique opinions), one thing has become abundantly clear to me.  Poker players are a difficult group to rally and unite.

It has been two weeks since Black Friday, and now I can see how it has pushed some people that I once thought were just full of themselves to put their best foot forward and it has provoked snide vindictive tongue lashings from people that I once admired, but thought were just misunderstood.

So much infighting and bickering has transpired across the social networks that the message is getting lost. Everybody is so busy writing, blogging, tweeting and podcasting their own personal opinions that the handful of analysts that are taking the time to listen and pull it all together into one united voice are being slowly muffled under all the banter.

My RSS reader was blowing up for nearly two weeks. I could hardly keep up with it all. Some days there where as many as 50 writings in a single day, but only a few were unique, informative and factual. Maybe it’s time for all of the talkers to finally listen.

Now that the dust is settling, can we put our differences aside, stop the name calling and uninformed opining and begin the journey towards focusing our attention on the one single goal we can all agree upon? Can we start to move in the direction of rebuilding our industry before we mess it up for good?

The WSOP is just around the corner. Ladies and gentlemen, we have just a few short weeks to pull ourselves together before Vegas takes center stage and becomes the focus of the worldwide poker community.

Are we going to ship it or exit on the bubble?

A brief update…

It’s Friday morning, the kettle’s on, the girlfriend is at work [sigh] I’m off today because (just in case you didn’t know), there’s a little wedding going on in London and everyone in the UK can take today as a National holiday. Thank you William and Kate. (kettle’s boiled)…

I woke up this morning and decided to look at my blog and check out the stats on visitors. Much to my amazement, there’s more American viewers than British, maybe it’s because of the blog title? People that haven’t visited Vegas (or the USA) won’t  know what a ‘big-bill’ is, and NO! it’s not a big sweaty dungaree wearing tobacco chewing hillbilly. It’s a another name for $100 bill…
OK, enough of my bollocks, back to poker stuff. Independent Poker Events (IPE) is the organization that I’m representing at the moment, we work closely with casinos and online gaming company Genting Poker to provide a well run affordable poker tournament in your local casino for the live poker player. The backbone of IPE is The MegaStack, 20,000 chips, long clock (i said cLock), 9 handed tables and guaranteed prizepools. What more does a poker player want? Free money FFS? We currently have 2 established tournaments running:
Blackpool MegaStack – £100 Buy-in – £10,000 Guaranteed* – 1st weekend EVERY month – 3 dayer
Manchester MegaStack – £200 Buy-in – £20,000 Guaranteed* – 2nd weekend EVERY month – 2 dayer
Check the links above for all info about previous tournaments.
*80 players minimum to make the guarantee.
In June 2011 we’re adding 2 more venues to the MegaStack series:
Newcastle MegaStack - £200 Buy-in – £20,000 Guaranteed* – 3rd weekend EVERY month – 2 dayer
Liverpool MegaStack - £200 Buy-in – £20,000 Guaranteed* – 4th weekend EVERY month – 2 dayer
You can keep upto date via twitter @circusmegastack and Facebook IPE Megastack so please add/follow us. Our ultimate goal at IPE is to bring more and more grass root players into the ‘poker scene’ and play in a big fre online game experience for a small buy-in with brilliant prize money up for grabs. In 2011 the IPE MegaStack has generated £68,000 in prizepools WOW! For £100 and £200 buy-ins? Nothing short of amazing in my opinion. If you’re reading this and want to get involved or have any questions then just send me an email martin.devlin@ipeuk.com and I will be happy to help you and guide you in the right direction.
I’m listening to Tiesto – Clublife Las Vegas Volume 1 while I type and drink my {cold} coffee. New brew please! Sh*t! Sh’es not in Anna’s at work :)
We’ve got tickets to see him at Wet Republic @ The MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Memorial Day weekend 28th May 2011. You might wanna check out some photos of the Vegas pool party. I love it there, this will be my third time. Check the pics out! [kettle boils again] BRB…
I’m doing all this organizing for everyone else so what about me you might ask? What have I been doing myself? Well I’ve had nothing to shout about really, I only get to play in the MegaStacks as I’m too busy to play at the minute, I bubbled Aprils Blackpool event, UTG raises it up so I 4 bet shoved with AKs for about 70k. He snap calls with QQ and it holds. I played very well, I’m playing very well, my online game has changed a lot. I finished 19th in the Manchester MegaStack (15 got paid from 157) Again I played excellently throughout with no mistakes, if you play well and don’t make mistakes then YOU WILL WIN EVENTUALLY! OK then Dev; you played well so why didnt you cash in? you might ask;
20 left or so, I’ve got 180,000 chips average is about 150k so I’m in good shape, got a weak table and I’m VERY confident, I started the day on 108k so I’m just picking my spots and increasing steadily until I get involved in 3 quick succession hands which felt me. Blinds are 4,000/8,000 with an 800 ante, I’m in the BB (big blind) action folds to the SB (small blind) and he open shoves for 80,000 a standard move with only 10 x big blinds remaining being sat in the SB. I look down at AhQh so my chips go in before his! He turns over 10c8d, I’m ahead! The flop comes down 8 8 8 Thanks for coming. For the none poker players among you, I can’t win! I’m drawing dead. I lose 80,000 chips and now I’m falling short and in shove mode. 7 or 8 hands later i’m on the BB again and a guy min raises my BB to 16,000 (he only has about 30k behind) the other players fold so I put him all in because I thought his bet was GAY! and maybe he’d fold most hands. MIN RAISING IS GAY! I was right, his hand was shit and he didn’t have much (but he had more than me) I had KhTh and the villain was holding KJ, Jack on the flop so I lose 50k ish [sigh] The very next hand I’m in the SB and I look down at Kd9d everyone folds to me so I stick it in for 40k, the BB calls with QT and the first card out is a Queen. Adios Amigos!
So, I’m due one. I chopped an Omaha comp at the G casino in Manchester and I won a couple of MegaStack satellites for future events but other than the above, there’s been nothing else.
Life is good, I’m off to Vegas in 3 weeks with the love of my life, Anna! You really are amazing in every way, I appreciate everything you do for me. There isn’t a minute go by when you’re not on my mind. My daughter is 2 and a bit now, she’s fantastic, I see other 2 year old kids and they seem like hard work, crying, being bad, up all night, up too early, wont go to sleep etc… My Phoebe is a little diamond, she does as she’s told and i hardly ever have to tell her off, my leather belt does the trick every time! {joke}.
Passing the driving test is easy in the UK! They’ll let anyone drive here. :)
Well the wedding is on now so I best turn on the XBOX and play FIFA 11 and get my ass whipped of some 12 year old kids! If you want to add me you can: BigBillsDevlin and you can kick my ass too!
Thanks for reading,
I promise to update this shit at least once a week and do a detailed Vegas report for you.
Remember these dates:

Impending changes to SNGs on PokerStars

By admin on Friday, April 29, 2011
Filled Under: Uncategorized

PokerStars have released some information pertaining to the SNGs they run, following their teaser in February that they were “currently evaluating all SNG offerings, including rake”. This original statement led me to write this post on SNG rake, and it looks like PokerStars may have come to some similar conclusions to me based on the details they have released so far.

“PokerStars Steve” aka Steve Day, who is manager of SNGs on PokerStars (amongst other roles), was asked what was happening with SNGs during his interview on the recent episode of the 2+2 Pokercast (from 1:29:18 to 1:32:29). From that information, and his posts on this thread on 2+2 it seems the following changes will be made “sometime in May“.

Standardization of buy-ins
Certainly one flaw with the SNG lobby at PokerStars currently is that it isn’t very organised in relation to buy-in. It’s a little bit all over the place. Turbo SNGs have different buy-ins to non-turbos, some 45-mans and 180-mans have completely different buy-ins to their 9-man and 18-man counterparts, and also some of the amounts are quite unusual, such as there being $6 and $15 buy-in SNGs.

This looks set to change, and we can expect to see buy-ins conform to a more standard $5, $10, $20, $30, $50 model.

It also sounds like the lobby will be smartened up by including “speed” (turbo, non-turbo etc.) and “type” (Hold’em, Omaha etc.) columns, rather than that information being included in the tournament name as it is currently.

Slight reduction of rake
Although it’s somewhat disappointing to hear the rake reduction be described as “slight” as opposed to “significant”, “colossal”, or “ZOMG, forget rake, we’re going to pay you to play”, it is exciting to hear of any reduction of rake. I believe it is in the best interests for poker in the long term, as well as in the best interests for my pockets in the short term :)

Although no exact details have been released yet, the buy-in+rake format will look like this: $10+x, $20+y, and in many cases the x/y are likely to be non-rounded figures.

I’m not sure listing SNGs as $10+0.56 (for example) is a great thing to inspire fish to play, I think listing a SNG as $10 and it being $9.48+0.52 (for example) makes more sense. However I’m not really wishing to criticize anything that results in a reduction in rake, so I’ll take it!

It has been said that not all buy-ins will see a reduction in rake, but we will “definitely” see a gradual reduction in rake as you go from the lower stakes to the higher stakes SNGs. This was one of the main points of my aforementioned blog post, so I am pleased to see them fix this issue.

Blind structure

There are also some changes to blind structures and levels. Structures are being standardized/synchronized as much as possible at NLHE and PLO. The new structures have shorter levels with more frequent but smaller blind increases. Antes will be 10% of the big blind.

These changes only affect non-satellite Sit&Gos.

There has always been a huge jump in turbo SNGs on PokerStars from 100/200(25) to 200/400(25), where your comfortable 12bb stack suddenly becomes a red-zone 6bb stack in the space of one hand (pretty much 100% of the time it’s when I’m about to be in the big blind, FML). This jump doesn’t however exist in a turbo 180-man SNG which transitions from 100/200 to 125/250(25) to 150/300(25) to 200/400(50).

9-man, 18-man and 45-man turbo structure, but not 180-man

Presumably anomolies such as these are being eradicated, and although one can currently only speculate, it sounds like we may see the turbo structure go from:

  • 5 minute levels: 10/20, 15/30, 25/50, 50/100, 100/200, 100/200(25), 200/400(25), 300/600(50)
to something like…
  • 3 minute levels: 10/20, 15/30, 25/50, 30/60, 50/100, 75/150, 100/200, 100/200(20), 125/250(25), 150/300(30)
We shall have to wait and see. I think the standardization of structures is a good idea, and although I am unsure what effect the reduction of level time/increase in the number of levels will have on the fre online games, I can’t see it being a bad thing. Despite these alterations, the duration of SNGs will remain approximately the same to what they are currently, for the most part.
Hyper-Turbos?
Many people seem to be wondering if non-satellite Hyper Turbo SNGs will be introduced with these changes. I would speculate that they won’t be, as Stars seems reluctant to bring these in; evidenced by the fact they don’t exist already. Personally, I’m not sure if I want to see them introduced or not.

On the one hand, it might provide a free online game where I could earn a higher hourly rate, and potentially earn more VPPs to get back on the SNE train. On the other hand it might drive away traffic from game onlines that I currently do well in.

I also think Hyper/Super-Turbos blur the line between poker being a skill game online and gambling. Whilst obviously that skill edge will still exist for good players, the edge is thin, and in the short term for the average recreational player, I’d argue that these free online games are tantamount to playing a few hands of blackjack. Having said that, it would be interesting to see some kind of trial rolled, as happened with the new Fifty50 SNGs earlier in the year.

MTT Lobby?
Personally, I think it will be interesting to see what effect the changes have on the MTT lobby, which lists some SNGs at the top. This is prime real-estate which can potentially supply a lot of traffic the the virtual online gamess it lists, if they. I feel it gets too clogged up with too many Hyper Turbo satellites being listed, as well as game onlines that don’t run enough to benefit from this exposure (how the $60 Turbo 90-players SNG is still there I’m not sure. I don’t think even one of these runs a day. You can’t expect a fish to want to sign up to a SNG that only ever has 4 people signed up!). I think it could be beneficial, for example, to list the new $20+45-man tournaments on this page. Hopefully PokerStars will give this some thought.
MTT Lobby with my cleaning-up suggestions!

Final thought
I am very happy to see PokerStars taking active steps to improve their free online games. I was worried that this issue would get put on the back-burner as a result of Black Friday and the more pressing issues that have come about as a consequence of that (player balances etc.). With poker sites as competitive as ever at the moment, it is good to see the market leader take quick action to keep it’s players happy and to attract new players (although hopefully not too many good regs!), with the changes scheduled to take place within the next month or so.

I simply can’t complain.

To any US readers that have been affected by black Friday, you have my sincerest condolences. Whilst this has, at this stage, had no negative impacts on me or non US players this atrocity has been felt globally. I wish you all the best and ask you to stay strong, we are all hoping this matter gets sorted out; it truly is the most disgusting thing I’ve witnessed regarding anything I’ve seen with online gaming.

On a personal note, this has given me the wake call I’ve needed for some time now. I’ve whinged and moaned about the fre online game for too long, yet it’s always available for me to play when and where I want. I simply couldn’t fathom the thought of this luxury being taken away from me.

I took my final “shot” at abandoning a bankroll management structure about a month ago and no surprise, busted my role again. I’ve lost count as to how many times this happened over the past 12 months

Given the recent changes I’ve started over with a stringent bankroll management system, basically the same as my original one, but I’m sticking to it. I’ll also be keeping the absolute minimum online to play with, just in case I wake up and Australia loses their rights too.

There will be no reporting on big scores as I’m playing nano stakes, but at least I’m able to play. Growth over the past week has been consistent and I’m very happy with it.

Again, if you have been blocked from playing, I am deeply for you and hope you are able to come to a personal resolution.

For those of us that haven’t been affected, never take for granted what we have and do what you can to help others. No one deserves to have this happen to them!

Sincerest regards,
Custo

Crown Online Casino Braces For TV Week Logies; Katy Perry On Despite Lawsuit, by Greg Tingle – 29th April 2011

Australia’s night of nights – the TV Week Logie Awards are to hit James Packer’s Crown Online Casino – The Palladium to be exact, and security is to be on high alert as Katy Perry is to perform despite a lawsuit against ACP Magazines for story she says is not true. And, security and Crown Free Online Casin powers that be have banned mobile devices in response to last years Twitter-Gate, where one writer was fired for inappropriate Tweets. Will plastic handcuffs be required and will any footballer players or guests run a muck? Media Man and Gambling911 with the calm before the storm that is forecast to hit the TV Week Logies at James Packer’s most famous casino…

Crown Online Casino Expects Huge TV Week Logies Night; Show Must Go On Despite Katy Perry Lawsuit…

James Packer, Australian gambling and media king loves this event – certainly the positives it brings his world famous Crown Free Online Casino in Melbourne – home of the original real life and TV Underbelly (in with a slight chance of a Logie we hear).

On the 1st of May Australia and the world will know who the Logies winners will be, and there’s going to be plenty of news and gossip stemming from the prestigious event also.

‘The Teenage Dream’… call her what you will (but we are not sure on the Russell Brand statue these days before you ask us), has her scheduled performance confirmed at the Logies On Sunday evening. Not even her lawsuit against ACP Magazines…publishers of TV Week is going to slow down this runaway train.

Perry who arrived in about 56 hours ago in Melbourne for her down under tour, has fired off a lawsuit to ACP’s women’s gossip mag NW claiming it falsely reported that Perry married for six months to Russell Brand (star of Arthur and all round bloody funny chap)… has been having an affair with record producer Benny Blanco. It’s implied it was more than a fling.

Her writ, lodged in the Victoria Supreme Court against ACP Magazines, said: “By reason of the publication of the article, the plaintiff (Perry) has been gravely injured in her reputation and feelings (and) has suffered distress, embarrassment and humiliation.”

The suit, lodged on Wednesday, has put a shadow over the Logies Awards since ACP – the main partner of the event – is reportedly remunerating Perry in the region of $300,000 to perform on the big night.

The publishing firm may even have to more if Perry’s suit is successful. Her label EMI Music yesterday confirmed the pop singer was still due to perform.

ACP spokesman Peter Holder said: “ACP or Nine Entertainment Co have not been served with any court documents as yet and have no comment to make.”

It’s understood NW executive editor Corrine Barraclough flew to Melbourne yesterday to consult with lawyers.

Shane Bourne To Host Logie Awards…

TV actor Shane Bourne will host the 2011 Logie Awards. In a statement announcing who would be the host, TV Week said Bourne “promises to deliver what he does best” at the 53rd Annual Logie Awards on May 1 at Melbourne’s Crown Entertainment Complex. “I am genuinely thrilled to be involved in TV’s night of nights,” Bourne said. “It’s an honour to be following in the footsteps of such television luminaries as Bert Newton et al – and the timing couldn’t be better. “I’ve always enjoyed myself immensely at the Logies, and since the chances of a nomination coming my way this year look pretty slim, I figure it’s not a bad way of making sure I score an invitation.” Bourne currently stars in the Seven Network drama series City Homicide, but is also known for his comedic roles. Most recently, he hosted the popular show Thank God You’re Here and was a regular on Hey Hey It’s Saturday for many years. I just thought I’d share this…

I dunno, I think this song is a little inspirational. You can’t help but love the title: “One X.” I guess if there was ever a time that U.S. poker players needed to collectively use our One Time, it’s now…

It has been an interesting few weeks in poker, to say the least. I have tried to cash out a large portion of my bankroll from the two main sites. Pokerstars, after what appears to have been a genuine technical issue, got me my money inside a week. Well done Stars – your reputation as the best in the business is well deserved (particularly with the news that they are now paying out US players). I am still waiting on a substantial cash out from Full Tilt. They have been fucking useless, which is par for the course – other people that have attempted to cash out after me have (using the same method) have had their funds processed. To say that I am a little annoyed is an understatement.

Cereus, where I have no funds, have taken a different approach by only letting people cash out $250 at a time. That’s fucking disgusting, but pretty much what I expected. I’m actually somewhat surprised that they haven’t cut and run, particularly when the DoJ documents indicate that Scott Tom and his gang are still running the show over there. Meanwhile, Sebok continues to make a prize cunt of himself by not knowing what is going on and telling people to sit tight, whilst not acknowledging anything about Scott Tom’s continued involvement. Good work Joe, you fucking moron.

I have continued to plug away at six max. I continue to run very well and not play too badly. I think I have around 16,000 hands under my belt this month now, which is good, and I took advantage of the SCOOP reload bonus that Stars have offered.

From the twoplustwo MSPaint before and after Black Friday thread, here is a light amongst the gloom:

The last bank holiday was bliss. These three days at work look like being as quiet as fuck, and the next four days off from Friday seem awesome as well. I’m hoping to take some exercise and get a few hands of poker in, whilst doing a good amount of relaxing.

West Ham lost 3-0 at Chelsea. I didn’t see the free online game, supposedly we played alright (especially given the side we had out), however the main upside was that I won a few quid on my Torres to score bet. It was inevitable it would be against us, stuff like this always is. The other teams around us picked up no more than a point, which is excellent news, but we need at least seven points from the last four online games and I’m not sure we have it in us. We have Man City away on Sunday – I expect another defeat.

Godspeed.

Cashing Out on PokerStars

I received the following email from Pokerstars today:
There was absolutely no way that I would bother pulling out the massive $16.08 balance from my account, given that I could potentially be responsible for bank fees. But, as you can see below (bottom left corner), I had won T$55.00 for a seat to the the Women's Sunday Tournament scheduled on the weekend following Black Friday.
