Six months ago I recorded a podcast with my girlfriend and the lovely Change100 asked me questions about the origins of my first novel — Jack Tripper Stole My Dog. I recently re-uploaded the original podcast to Sound Cloud. If you haven’t heard the five minute podcast yet, well, here it is…

If you haven’t seen the trailer, here it is…

Jack Tripper Stole My Dog would be a great stocking stuffer. The novel and even a Kindle version are both available on Amazon.com.

November Stats

Pokerstars $3987 ( + $704) Party $604 ( =)
+$704 for November.Total roll $4591

Played 682 sngs in November and as usual that was without playing any poker at all between Mon-Thus each week.I also managed to play 104 sngs in one session last Sat night which is probably a record for me.( all hypers though)

Of the 682 sngs 659 were hypers and after breaking even at them and winning the only $15 ,180 player turbo I played, next month I’m only going to play one $15 game online and save myself a lot of time and pointless grinding. If only poker worked like that!

I don’t mean to keep referring back to Jared Tendlers book, however I liked the example about a top sportsman getting paid millions to perform but not being paid at all to work out in the gym.Without the gym workout he’s not going to be a top sportsman and without playing through the run bad/break even stretch I’m never going to take down the virtual games I do win and make a profit.

Not much else going on.I saw an article linked by Everton Yorkie on the RTR forum which says that Facebook could launch real money poker in the UK from as early as the first quarter of next year.Even if only a tiny % of the huge number of Facebook play money players decided to give real money a go there could be very juicy times ahead! I don’t twitter and I don’t Facebook but I can see me signing up for the latter in double quick time if this goes ahead. And yeah I would give up on all my principles about privacy, online anonymity etc for a higher hourly profit rate.Show me the money!

I’m not sure how easy it would be to persuade play money players to play for real money. When I started with play money on Pokerroom back in June ’05 I chose Pokerroom because it was only possible to reload for 2000 play chips per day. When Pokerroom withdrew their play money tables at Halloween that year I tried Stars for my poker fix and hated the fact that players were allowed to reload play chips with no limit.Where’s the skill in that I thought.( without the slightest trace of irony)

It was that and the big Halloween first deposit bonus on offer at Pokerroom that first persuaded me to make the switch to real cash poker. And hey I’m glad I did or I’d never have become the anti-social,button mashing, carpal tunnel ridden couch potato I am today.Thank the poker gods I’ve at least made ( yeah prob less than the min wage per hour but still a profit!)some money playing poker and I do actually quite enjoy the free online game or I’d really be up the creek without a paddle.

As a real money player it’s easy to mock those who only use play money.I remember being quite proud of my million play chip bankroll and thinking I must be quite good to have built such a roll.If you know anyone playing Facebook poker who thinks the same as I did then be nice to them, gently encourage them to open a real money Stars account and tell them low stakes sngs’s are a great way to start out….

Back soon..

New Begginning

Well it has been a while since I updated my blog properly or even played much poker. Guess I was just fed up with being 3 outer’d consistently. So even after a coaching session I decided to just stop and just play some other fre online games for a while.

Played some 8-Game cash and limit game onlines with a few Omaha H/L Micro MTT’s for variation.

Anyway looking to start playing my 18man SNG’s again, and play a decent amount from beginning of the new year. I expect I will lose for a while as I get used to playing again but hope to ride it out and try to get better. I think I may try to play about 10 free online games a day, 5x $3.50 and 5x $1.50. Thursday is going to be a problem to play them as time is short after I get home from work and getting out too play my regular Live SNG at the local pub. I need to play another 150 $1 virtual online gamess before I get to a thousand, and I hope to get these played before the new year.

So can I have some run good please.

Here is my current 18man graph at $1 game onlines

Have been trying teach learn some PLO recently too which is such an interesting game online. I play some of the small amount of cash I have on Cake and doing ok, but getting killed on PokerStars, virtual game seems to play so much different on stars, but will continue with it.

Played a few fre online games today during my lunch and found a monster fish. I like having him at my tables. Here is his sharkscope.

Wicked Chops Podcast: Talking Bitar and Tilt

By admin on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

In it, F-Train details the interview process for the feature, as well some conclusions that could be drawn about the man who helped make Full Tilt Poker the giant it once was.

“James” Ex-Full Tilt Technology
Ray Bitar was not an especially impressive executive.  When Howard Lederer was president of Tiltware, it was hard to tell that Ray was CEO [for early hires like myself] as most people assumed that Howard was in charge and Ray took his orders from Howard.  At the very least Ray seemed careful not to make any decision, no matter how trivial, without getting Howard’s input and buy-in.  Part of this is that Howard was far more technically oriented than Ray, and in a company that is primarily a software development company, Howard was able to better understand the technology.

Read the Bitar piece (by signing up for Insider) here. We’ve included some excerpts from the feature after the jump as well.

We recorded a two-parter podcast yesterday. Part I is now live and discusses The Rise and Fall of Ray Bitar WCi feature with its author, Dave “F-Train” Behr.

Dave F-Train Behr takes us along for a ride in discussing the rise and fall of Ray Bitar.

“Peter” Ex-Full Tilt Pro
I’ve known Ray a long time. I’ll just say that Ray is not a thief, he was just in way over his head.

“Dave” Ex-Full Tilt Marketing
[Ray] couldn’t confront somebody about something. He had a hard time with that. Say you’re his employee and you fuck up. He’s either not going to say anything or just completely blow up. He’s not going to pull you aside and say, “Hey this is what you’re doing wrong. Can you recognize this. Can you fix this. Can you do better at this.” He had no middle ground on that kind of stuff.

“Albert” Ex-Full Tilt Management
Ray was an “absentee micromanager.”

On working for Ray Bitar…

On the start of Full Tilt Poker…

On the downfall…

Part II of the podcast–a panel discussion all about The Walking Dead–will go up later today.

Facebook to Offer Real Money Gaming in Europe?

By admin on Wednesday, November 30, 2011
Filled Under: Uncategorized

Current speculation is Facebook would rollout real money gaming in the U.K. first and expand throughout Europe from there.

Interestingly, not mentioned as a partner in this is Zynga, who currently operates the largest poker room in the world. Zynga recently said they have no plans for real money gaming, although we think they should reconsider.

No longer a secret: Facebook in talks to open real money gaming in Europe.

According to eGaming Review (paywall link here), Facebook is in exploratory talks with a number of online operators to open a real money gaming platform, potentially as early as the first quarter of 2012.

Talks are reported to include companies such as 888 Holdings and Gamesys. We’ve learned that the 888 talks could particularly be advanced, as those have been going on since the summer.

Two words: Game. Changer.

[Maguire] strongly disputes that he violated any laws, rules or regulations in regard to participating in the poker fre online games.

Other famous celeb poker players named in the lawsuit have settled as well, including Gabe Kaplan ($26,900 ).

However,  actor-director Nick Cassavetes is going to fight the case in court.

Said Spidey’s legal team in a statement:

The settlement money will go to a bankruptcy trustee and will be used to repay Rudderman ponzi victims.

Actor/poker player Tobey Maguire has agreed to pay $80,000 to settle a lawsuit with the bankruptcy trustee handling Bradley Rudderman‘s ponzi scheme case. Maguire, along with a number of other Hollywood execs and actors, are alleged to have won money in “illegal” poker home virtual online gamess from Rudderman.

Read more about the case and settlements here and here.

However, the settlement helps stave off a potentially lengthy and costly legal battle.

Tobey Maguire is still in shock he's got to pay a settlement on a BS lawsuit.

Being Human

By admin on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Human BeingVictoria Coren wrote a neat, short Guardian piece yesterday titled “How do you find the best player in the world?”

There she reflects briefly on the recent International Federation of Poker event in which teams from 11 nations (plus a team from the “virtual” nation of Zynga) completed against one another using the duplicate poker format. I wrote a little about the IFP event, though not so much about duplicate poker, in my Community Cards column for Epic Poker this week, “Poker as a Sport.”

Coren’s succinctly-made point yesterday was to point out how difficult — really, impossible — it is to rank poker players according to any utterly unambiguous scale. “I rather like the impossibility of naming anyone ‘best,’” writes Coren, adding that “the ensuing, unceasing argument is so human.”

I rather like Coren’s choice of adjective to conclude that thought. It is “human” to attempt such futile tasks. And it’s our being “human” that helps contribute to the impossibility of objectively ranking poker players.

She ends her column with a quote from the last page of Richard Jessup’s novel The Cincinnati Kid, a book I wrote about here some years ago. The quote is in fact presented in the novel as an idea Christian (Eric’s girlfriend) tries to impart to the Kid. “For every number one man there is a number two man,” goes the idea, “and because of this a man cannot retreat from life.”

'The Cincinnati Kid' by Richard Jessup (1964)Then comes a pronouncement about the seemingly unbeatable Lancey Howard: “The difference is that the number one man is a machine and the Cincinnati Kid is not, and was not, and never will be a machine.”

The implication that Lancey is “a machine” sounds an ironic note when we recall his nickname — “The Man.” Another implication, of course, is that being human means being capable of losing. That no “number one” can ever continue as such without being challenged. Not if he’s human, that is.

All of that talk resonated strongly with me today as we just happen to be reading and discussing “poker bots” and online poker in my “Poker in American Film and Culture” class. Our readings consider recent efforts in artificial intelligence to create poker-playing computer programs — i.e., to make machines more human-like — as well as how online poker might have the effect of making humans more machine-like.

All of these items — artificial intelligence, poker bots, online poker, the fictional character Lancey Howard — encourage us to consider the significance of the human element in poker. And how it is our flaws and our efforts to exploit those of others and suppress our own that make the virtual online games interesting and meaningful — not a “retreat from life,” but an expression of it.

A 6-Day Mo

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world.

The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

movember.com

So I decided to put in a late entry to this years movember. A pretty dumb move considering that my decision took place on Nov 28th, lol.

I had already about 3 days growth so thought I would give it a good weeks effort. However I forgot that there are only 30 days in November so I only achieved a nice 6 day mo. My attempt at side handlebars is pretty lame too but not much you can do in 6 days. I will give it the full month next year. Starting so late also means that I could not really put together a sponsorship page so I will just donate to a mate’s page or directly to the site.

Here is my 6-day Mo:

The Mental Game of Poker Holiday Sales

By admin on Wednesday, November 30, 2011
Filled Under: Uncategorized

As it’s approaching Xmas, we have put the Mental Game of Poker on sale (Which may continue in January too as everyone is skint at New Year). It is now retailing around the £16-£20 mark for softcover, and £7.12 for Kindle.

Amazon are awesome, but some things about how they work have been annoying. Most notably that when they are out of stock, they put a massive ‘Out of Stock’ sign up on the book page, even though there six other amazon traders selling it, including one which is fulfilled by Amazon themselves – so for all intents and purposes it is very much NOT out of stock.

Anyway, we hit a post-black Friday 12 month sales target yesterday with the book, 5 months early, so I am happy enough. I say post black Friday because the goal for the year obviously rapidly changed, when we launched the book on historically worst day in the history of poker to release a book.

Towards the end of the year, we will finally work on Book Number 2. We had so much material we had to leave out we knew a second one was in the pipeline, hopefully the response will be just as good for the next one.
